 PERIOD 7: 1898 - 1945

American imperialism is the economic, military, and cultural influence of the United States on other countries. Such influence often goes hand in hand with expansion into foreign territories. Expansion on a grand scale is the primary objective of an empire, a notable example being the British Empire.   The Age of Imperialism, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, had the United States pursue an aggressive policy of expansionism, extending its political and economic influence around the globe. That pivotal era in the history of our nation is the subject of this online history (Chapters 27-36).  Two main factors that led to American Imperialism were the creation of the United States Navy and the expansion of America's economic interests overseas. American Imperialism began in the 1890s, increased into the early 1900s, and began to slow down after that.  In and of itself, imperialism means to extend a country's power through military and diplomacy. Its name originated from the Latin word "imperium", which means to rule over large territories. American Imperialism was, and to some extent today, is "a policy of extending a country's power and influence through colonization, use of military force, or other means".
