AP PSYCHOLOGY EXAM

This week, I will be starting my 16th year teaching Advanced Placement (AP) PSYCHOLOGY; and,  I have seen during that time the importance of a more rigorous high school experience in preparing students to succeed in college.

As the College Board noted in its 2019-20 AP Instructional Report, we did extremely well last May in taking the AP PSYCHOLOGY National Exam.   Honestly, each year every incoming class to AP PSYCHOLOGY has their own culture as a group, and come to AP PSYCHOLOGY with their own skill sets which I try to size up as a group their commonalities, weaknesses and strengths.  Usually, I am able to achieve this in the first 3-4 weeks in order to establish a plan of action for the year.   And most importantly, I like to get to know my students'
  • expectations for taking the course, and why are they taking the course
  • what have they heard about the course, or me or any unfounded myths they might have heard
  • what skill-sets do they possess in critical listening, thinking, problem-solving and/or decision-making
  • what kind of learner are they (i.e., auditory, visual or tactile,  or a combination)
  • how best can I utilize their unique personalities to help them succeed in the class
  • what did they learn in previous years, and where are their commonalities among their class group
  • what are their strengths & weaknesses
  • how do they study, what skill-sets to they posses in studying, and how have they changed their study skills since middle-school
The beginning of each school year starts with INTRODUCTIONS, so we can maximize the entire year and succeed in passing the national exam.  I do believe the investment we make in the first few weeks will pay-off at the end-of-the-school-year.

Myers' Psychology
[9th Edition]

This is an entire textbook written on a lower Lexile score than our Myers Psychology for AP.  You may want to use it as well this year.

Myers' Psychology [2nd Edition] for AP

When you receive your TEXTBOOK, I ask you to REVIEW the textbook, skim the chapters, cover-to-cover, and get familiar with the layout and contents within it.

Please note how Myers uses terminology, illustrations and applications within the chapters.  It can get you to pass the national exam itself.

[50 PTS] Parent Film & TV Permission Form

Please skim over the (and your parents) the movie list which I would like to use (clips, scenes or in entirety) throughout the year.   It is easier to get parental approval at the beginning than trying to get 100% of parents in just a couple of days if we were to show something.  With that in mind, if you have any suggestions - I'd welcome input as well.   We rarely watch entire movies until after the national exam, but this helps me just in case.  Please return it signed by the deadline for some simple, but easy points.

True Colors Personality Test
DONE AS ACTIVITY IN CLASS [35 POINTS]

True Colors is a personality profiling system created by Don Lowry in 1978. It was originally created to categorize four basic learning styles using the colors blue, orange, gold and green to identify the strengths and challenges of these core personality types.
